When does the holiday season actually start in Glen Ellyn? On the 2026 calendar it has a clear starting point: 8 a.m. on Thursday, November 26, at Lake Ellyn Park, when the Glen Ellyn Park District's Turkey Trot starts.
Over the next 50 hours or so, almost everything that defines a Glen Ellyn December opens. The downtown tree gets lit, the Santa mailbox goes up at Main and Crescent, the holiday windows go on display, and Santa House opens its doors on Main Street. Most of November is a lead-in to that weekend. Most of December runs on dates that weekend sets.
This Week, Before Any of That
Halloween hasn't wrapped up yet as this goes live. The Park District's Pumpkins on Main jack-o'-lanterns are on display outside the Main Street Recreation Center, 501 Hill Avenue, through October 31. If you have little ones, Glen Ellyn Public Library's Jack-O'-Lantern Jamboree is Friday, October 30, from 11 to 11:45 a.m., and it's aimed at young children and their caregivers.
The downtown Halloween Festival & Parade took place on Saturday, October 24. Once these last few October dates pass, the calendar goes quiet until early November.
November Is the Lead-In
November has a few events worth putting on the calendar, and each one points toward the Thanksgiving weekend start.
- Thursday, November 5 and Thursday, November 12, 5 to 9 p.m. Ladies Night Out brings ticketed holiday shopping at participating downtown shops. The Downtown Glen Ellyn Alliance's event page has tickets and mentions discounts, wine and treats.
- Saturday, November 7, 9 to 11 a.m. The Park District's free Pumpkin Smash takes over Village Green Park, 130 S. Lambert Road.
- Saturday, November 7, 2 p.m. The Glen Ellyn Historical Society presents The Uniform of the Continental Soldier.
- Saturday, November 14, 2 p.m. The Historical Society follows with Alexander Hamilton: Financing a New Nation.
November 7 makes an easy double: smash pumpkins in the morning, then hear the soldier talk in the afternoon. Historical Society programs are held at the History Center, 800 N. Main St., unless a listing says otherwise. Both talks fit with the Society's Declaration 1776 exhibit, which runs at the History Center through December 31. A second exhibit there, The Language of Shape in Glen Ellyn Architecture, stays up through February 2027, with visiting hours Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Ladies Nights work as a preview. They come three weeks and then two weeks before the official start, so shoppers see what the downtown boutiques carry for the season before the windows are dressed and the extended hours begin.
The 50 Hours That Start the Season
The Village of Glen Ellyn's fall and winter events list and the Downtown Alliance calendar agree on the order. Here it is from start to finish.

Thursday at the lake
The Turkey Trot is a free 4-mile run that starts at Lake Ellyn Park on Thanksgiving morning. With an 8 a.m. start, runners are done well before most Thanksgiving kitchens get busy. That makes it the one holiday event that fits on the holiday itself.
Friday on Main Street
The Holiday Walk & Tree Lighting is free. According to the Downtown Alliance, the street opens at 5 p.m., Santa lights the tree at 6, and from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. there's downtown shopping, Santa pictures and hot cocoa at the fire station. The Village also lists a separate Holiday Walk at Glen Ellyn Public Library on the same day.
Four longer-running pieces of the season also start that Friday. The Snow Globe Stroll pairs holiday window displays with a scavenger hunt. Project Light Up Glen Ellyn brings extended holiday shopping hours and lit-up streets. Both run through December 31. And the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce sets up the Santa mailbox at the northeast corner of Main Street and Crescent Boulevard. The Village lists the mailbox address as 471 Main St.
Saturday morning at Santa House
Santa visits begin on Saturday, November 28, at the Santa House, 425 Main St. The Village lists them as "Santa visits & strolling carolers." The Downtown Alliance gives hours of 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, notes that times may vary, and says pets are welcome in the photos.
December Runs on Three Deadlines
After Thanksgiving weekend, the season mostly runs on its own. You can stop by the windows or Santa House any weekend. What matters in December are a few end dates, and families who miss them don't get a second chance.
- Sunday, December 13: last day for Santa letters. Letters "mailed" by this date get a reply from Santa with a signed photo, as long as they include a readable return address. Because the mailbox opens November 27, the full window is just over two weeks.
- Sunday, December 20: last Santa House weekend. Visits run on weekends from November 28 through December 20. Counting both, that's four weekends for photos.
- Thursday, December 31: windows and lights end. The Snow Globe Stroll and Project Light Up Glen Ellyn both run through New Year's Eve.
Three evening events fill in the first half of December. The Historical Society has Christmas by Candlelight on its calendar for Friday, December 4, at 4 p.m., but hasn't posted details yet. On Saturday, December 5, St. Mark's Episcopal Church hosts the Holiday Illumination Concerts. And on Wednesday, December 9, the Ugly Sweater Dine Around offers discounted food and drink at participating downtown restaurants.
If your house goes all out with lights, the Downtown Alliance's Glen Ellyn Home Holiday Lights Contest is open for registration and runs through December. Categories include Most Festive, Best Use of Lights, Most Creative and The Clark Griswold Award.
The Crescent Boulevard Saturday
One stretch of Crescent Boulevard has changed since last winter, and that matters for the many Saturdays between Thanksgiving and New Year's.
The Chamber is again offering free family movies at the Glen Art Theatre, 540 Crescent Blvd., on Saturdays in November and December. The film lineup is on separate fall and holiday flyers posted on the Chamber's free family movies page.
Next door at 550 Crescent Blvd., Glen Ellyn Candy & Cones opened in late June 2026, taking over from Glen Ellyn Sweet Shoppe, as Patch reported when the shop hit its first month. The shop's website is advertising hot apple cider. It lists hours of 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Those are the same hours Patch reported in July, and they mean the shop is open later than any of the posted Santa House visits.
Put those together and a December Saturday comes together on one block. Start with Santa House at 425 Main St. in the late morning, walk a block or two to the Main and Crescent mailbox, catch a movie at the Glen Art, and finish with cider next door at 550 Crescent. Every stop is within a few steps of the corner where Santa lights the tree on November 27.
I've lived in the western suburbs for more than 25 years, and Thanksgiving weekend in downtown Glen Ellyn is still one of my favorite stretches of the year. If family visiting for the Turkey Trot or the tree lighting starts asking what homes near Main Street and Lake Ellyn are like these days, I'm always glad to talk it through.
